You can buy mushroom impregnated dowel plugs which can be added to logs/stumps. First you just drill a hole and then wait for the 'shrooms to grow. I have seen kits for oyster mushrooms, shitake, lions mane and a few I can't even remember the name of. You can buy them pretty cheaply at Sutton's seeds. Just imagine; getting rid of your stumps while getting something yummy for the table. Plus they look pretty cool as well! Enjoy!

Depending on the size of the tree/stump, some can just be pulled.
I have seen a tripod made of 4x4 lawn/garden edging lumber tied with a chain at the top and a come-along/hoist used to just lift the stump out of the ground. If the tree is over about 8-10" diameter, it probably won't do the trick.
Many people tie a chain/towstrap around the trunk and attach it to the trailer hitch of a pickup/tractor, etc and pull out the stump or tree. Be careful, if you get a run at it and hit the end of the chain, it might snap and fly around and damage things or people.
I cut them as close to the ground as possible, then take a long 1" bit and drill as many holes as possible in them.
That will facilitate them rotting naturally.
I have seen people pour things from Drano to battery acid down the holes to speed up the process.
I have poured a small amount gasoline down the holes and burned the stumps, but be careful, VERY careful with fire.
There are safe chemicals if you want the stump gone quickly.
Ask at your garden supply store.

There are firms who will come and "grind" the stumps to below ground level for you if you just want them out of sight.
To encouarge them to rot, you could try putting some rotting material round them, preferably from another decaying tree of the same type. I've found that that helps, but it still will take several years to complete.
Another answer, if you have a good anchorage point such as another big tree nearby, would be to hire a hand operated winch from a tool hire shop that you can use to pull the tree down with. Cut it down partly first but leave as much as you can in the ground. Then attach the chain or strong rope to the top, anchor the winch to the bottom of the other tree (or metal stake banged into the ground) and pull it down. Fir trees are not very deep rooted so the stump and a lot of the root will come out of the ground with it. Good luck.

Cut deep slits with chain saw in design like you would make to play tic, tac, toe. Or use large Drill Bit and bore deep holes. Buy cheap table salt and pour it in followed by hot water. Repeat about every 2 weeks and then about once a month. This method is safe for use around children and animals. We used a generous amount of salt and boiled a tea kettle a couple of times and it looked funny to see us water a stump with boiling water but there was zero regrowth and the stump rotted away in place.

drill holes and either pour cresote (not timber treatment) or cement down holes, or only cut trees down 3/4s the way and use the remaining stump as leaverage, digging a hole around outside of stump and fill with water to soften the ground the night before

Drill the holes...........then pour whole buttermilk into the holes. The enzymes in the buttermilk will start the decaying process and soon there will be no stumps. Inspect the holes every 3 or 4 days and treat again for several weeks.

Good Luck they are little critters to get rid off. We drilled holes as close to the roots as possible and poured down diesel/petrol. They take it in and it kills them. You will need quite abit over a course of a couple of weeks.

You can buy stump-killers from any garden store. But most of them will just prevent future growth. You will need to burn it after the stump-killer treatment. Here's how to properly do it http://www.humeseeds.com/stump.htm
