IS your windows genuine? Did you buy it and install it yourself? Did you register it? When you bought the computer was it already on it? If so, contact the seller and ask them about it.

Yes you can. Either buy a genuine copy if its not genuine or turn off the Windows Genuine checker in internet explorer. Go to Tools Options and then programs and manage ad ons. Then disable the Genuine checker program. This will allow you to get the secuirty updates just not the optional extras that you can get from other sites anyway.
Try the below source site for step by step instructions.

You can get a genuine copy - they are selling copies of XP cheap now Vista is coming out. Or stop the thing connecting to Microsoft - for automatic updates and then do a search for all files containing WGA Windows genuine advantage. most will delete. The two that won't WGATRAY.EXE and it's friend - move to your desktop. Then right click your taskbar and get Task manager up - clcik processes and find WGATRAY.EXE - and highlight it then end process. Once the bugger has stopped running delete it. Then delete the data file. If the data file won't delete restart your computer and then delete it. Stop you computer connecting for updates to Microsoft or it will do it all again! Don't get Vista - WGA on Vista will have a kill switch! Actually - this one has a kill switch if you wait too long before deleting that crap.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/WhyValidate.aspx?displaylang=
and validate to see if your Windows is genuine or not. Microsoft recently released a program called Windows Genuine Advantage
that requires users to validate their copy of Windows when accessing several various Microsoft services such as Windows Update. I believe you will continue to get the message until you obtain a validated copy. This problem may be due to several reasons ranging from you downloading a pirated copy of Windows and using it to you purchasing a unknowningly counterfeit version from a retailer. Try contacting a representative of Microsoft about the problem.

If you know your copy is genuine don't worry, its a well known glitch in the wretched Microsoft Genuine Advantage Tool; all you do is phone Microsoft with details of where you bought it and they'll help you fix the problem.
