The Mets are short for the Metropolitians. Obviously New York being the biggest Metropolitian area in the country the Metropolitians is a fitting name. Also the New York Knicks basketball team is short the Knickerbachers which is a nickname for someone who lives in New York City. I hope this helps. Go Mets.

Also, they were named the Metropolitans to unite the boroughs of New York, since the Dodgers and Giants, who originally played in New York, left.

The Mets is short for Metropolitans, and rhymes with Jets. The Mets and Jets have been closely linked, as they used to share Shea and prior to that the Polo Gounds.
