MDF works well for projects like this and its cheap too!

i agree with the above... MDF is a good material to use. its strong, easy to work with, and relatively cheap. If price is a much bigger issue, you can use plywood, but make sure that you at least get mdf for the surface. the surface is the one thing that you will want to be really careful what you select, since that is what you will be seeing, and working on.

i used a piece of worktop, batten it on the short side near the wall and on the long edge against the wall . then you buy a metal support for the opposite corner . if you use this method don't forget to drill holes close to the wall as this is where your wires for pc etc will run.

I saw this great trading spaces where they used these old wood doors they bought at a used building materials store (for cheap.) They used them for both the legs/supports and the top, and it looked really cool...with glass top to make it smooth
