The US should ban capital punishment. The reasoning is not moral. I feel it is entirely morally justified to put a known convicted murderer to death. In the vast majority of cases, the death penalty is certainly deserved and warranted. In many instances, I would like to pull the trigger myself and put the SOB 6 feet under. The murderer of Polly Klass and people like Ted Bundy come to mind.

So capital punishment isn't wrong, per se. What is wrong is the complete lack of competence and consistency within the US legal system.

Put it this way - the same morons who managed to come to the conclusion that OJ Simpson was not guilty and allowed him to walk scot free could also conclude that some innocent Joe was guilty and put him to death.

This has happened on many, many occasions. Just watch the documentary "The Thin Blue Line" made in the 1980s to see firsthand how an innocent person can get railroaded and sentenced to death. Also the Illinois convict sentenced to death based on shoeprint testimony that was later proved to be complete quackery.

In short, in a perfect legal system it is acceptable. We are far from a perfect legal system. Because it is irreversible, it should be banned.

To also clarify, we aren't the only "civilized" country to allow capital punishment. Most of the democracies of Asia, including Japan, still administer it.

I wouldn't call for outright banning because it doesn't really go against the constitution anything. I would just like people to stop using it, maybe reserving it for only serial killers.

I think life in prison is more meaningful than death. Your freedom is gone and you are forced to live with the guilt of your crimes.

In jail, people can change and make amends, which they can't do if they're dead. It's like the case of Tookie Williams. He became anti-gang in jail and helped others stay off his path. What if he had been executed right after his sentence, before he changed? He wouldn't have been able to do anything for society.

However, some people are so cold-blooded and demented they do deserve death. Like this one serial killer (he's dead now and I forgot his name). He was convicted, released on a technicality, and when he got out, he murdered two more people.

No!!!! what we should do however is limit the time that someone has to spend on death row if your convicted of killing a person you should be put to death within 24 hrs. that does not include people who are obviously insane. But Charles Manson should have been dead years and years ago. Why should law abiding people have to pay for those that have killed. Maybe we should even let the family of the murder victim decide how the execution should be done.

i believe we should have capital punishment under certain circumstance. if scott petterson, could plan to kill his 8month pregnant wife, let alone on christmas eve, pretend she just walked out the door for a walk with the dog, and never came back, pretends ot be the grieving husband, while yet having his girlfriend on the side. he disposes the body in the bay the samebody that carries his son, this is the reason we have the death penalty. this i do aprove of.

No way, even if we dont use it we should have the option to use it. If we ban it we are sure to see cases pop up where we wish we had not. Not using capital punishment and banning it are 2 different cases.

Civilized countries have all banned capital punishment. The US has more people in prison than anywhere else in the world and the US has capital punishment. I guess that means that the US is not a civilized country.

I can't say it better them shane L. If there was a guarantee i would see every rapist and murderer get the electric chair, forget the needle, let em fry. But plenty have sat on death row only to be later proven Innocent with DNA. They say its better to let a 100 guilty man free, them to let an innocent pay the price for something he din't do. I happen to agree.
