I have a 1997 Nissan 200SX SE. It has 120,000 miles in it. Regularly checked and maintained. Just had the spark plugs replaced. It idols high when stopping at a light then goes back to normal then idols very high again until I push on the gas pedal. Any idea what the cause can be? I don't have a reliable mechanic and hope I can get an idea about the problem before I take it to the shop.

There are several things that can cause this behavior. You could have a vacuum leak. You could have something mis-aligned on the throttle linkage. You could have a coolant temperature sensor out of range. You could have a MAF sensor misbehaving. The PCV Valve could be defective.
There are so many possible causes, you REALLY NEED to take it to someone who can actually "lay hands on it" as it were, and actually diagnose the cause and repair it for you.
As for finding a decent shop, ask your friends and co-workers where they go. Ask at your church for a good referral. Ask at a QUALITY parts house where they would take their mother's car. With the list you get, check with the local BBB or chamber of commerce if there are any complaints against any on the list. If your state has a watchdog agency for the automotive industry, (California has the Bureau of Automotive Repair), ask them for references for any on the list you have already put together.
At this point, you are dealing with the reputation(s) of the facility.

Good Luck

Three things come to mind. First, the throttle cable may need replacing, secondly a vacuum line might be off or damaged, and thrid your throttle position sensor might be defective. You could also have an intake leak but that would probably be unlikely just having a tune-up. The mechanic would not have been able to get the engine running smooth with an intake leak. You are going to have to have a mechanic look at it because it's pretty hard from this position to diagnose the cause. If it's vacuum or intake you should be able to hear a hissing sound when you have the hood up.

I'm a Nissan mechanic. It sounds like its just a vacuum hose. The hose could be broke or pulled off its connection. There are many of them,so to find it,you start the engine put it in park or Neutral set the em brake.Lift the hood up and listen for a hissing noise.Look at all the small looking hoses and make sure they are connected.Move the hoses around a little and see if the idle changes. What we do is take a can of carb cleaner and spray it around the hoses if the idle goes faster then there is a broken hose, all you do then is check all the small hoses for the broken one.

once you put in any severe flow exhaust factors you do away with the backpressure that your EGR valve (emmission componet) or Exhaust gas recirculation valve needs to precise function, you certainly improve the quantity of unpolluted air and that should reason a reasonable improve in idle besides as occasional knocking (pre-ignition). Your EGR actual feeds exhaust gas into your engine's manifold to decrease emmisions by utilising sabotaging your gas/air mixture. next ingredient, your intake mods could have brought about the two a vacuum leak interior the setting up of any new air clear out (unintended) or it ought to not be attached top. you need to have a bad verify valve on your brake booster, or your brake booster may be defective. the two could reason a vacuum leak and a vacuum leak of extensive proportions could reason a severe idle or maybe knocking under a load. So sure, any transformations to your automobile could reason any form of issues. i'm guessing which you have the ok & N clear out top? you recognize you nevertheless could desire to substantiate to scrub and re-oil them with the kits they sell i wish. My CRX have been given sloppy and whilst i become checking it out I observed that airborne dirt and dust and sand have been bypassing my clear out ingredient all mutually. probable did not help that i become in Baja yet you recognize what I advise. Now, one greater ingredient. you are able to commonly detect a college which will restoration your automobile's concern free of fee or much greater effectual you are able to bypass there and artwork on your own. I did it whilst i become in San Diego and that's the place I found out all those issues, regrettably i can in basic terms know plenty over the computing gadget, there are various different reasons mutually with actual harm to your throttle physique that should try this. Your choke may be sticking? no.. (on condition which you had an previous carbureated kind) yet you have a ninety six Honda Civic = no carb... gas injected rather. the appropriate attempt is to close off your automobile and borrow a smoke gadget and look ahead to the leak. i'm going to assert that your concern has a ninety% probability of being an intake/vacuum leak, possibly a hose is off someplace. stable luck and in case you opt for greater i'm going to do my appropriate.. I have the exact same problem with my 97 Mazda B3000. I wish I had the answer. I intend to ask some "car guys" I know this weekend. If they have an answer I'll pass it along.

Until then, I'm adding this question to my watch list in hopes somebody will provide some insight.

could be a vacuum leak ,maybe the last plug change disrupted a vac. hose, replace 'em all they are cheap and tough to diagnose, after that "fogging"your intake system with a spray bottle full of water (avoid the electrical bits) will sometimes pinpoint the suspect area good luck this could be tricky

Make sure thr mechanic is ASE certified.. They will have a shoulder patch to indicate such.
ASE certification doesn't guarantee a good mechanic but you will at least know he has passed an extensive written test which requires some mechanical skills.

Look at the linkage. If the idle changes after you tap the gas pedal it may be stuck. As others have said your idle valve could also be dirty or bad but in most cases taping the pedal does not correct it though.

I think it has to do with your timing. The engines timing is off and needs to be adjusted. This can be easily fixed. Ask any good neighbor, preferably one of my peeps. A Latino! They know it all, and will do it for free. *Also, "Ironhand" is good. He answer one of my auto questions and was right on the spot!*
