Yes, it is safe. It is a common technology used by many websites to make the web page more interactive. As it is supported by many types of computer, it also makes it a great alternative to many media players, which is why watching movies tends to require it these days.

Flash used to be owned by Macromedia, who also produced Shockwave too. Adobe (of Adobe Acrobat Reader fame) brought out Macromedia and began rebranding their software as Adobe. Similar story with Raxco (of Easy CD/DVD Creator and Easy Media Creator).

The software remains free to download, and provides many new features to help against hackers and viruses. Con artists and hackers are constantly looking for ways to rip you off, so my advise is to go to the Adobe website direct to download the software as a link on a web page might take you to a cleverly constructed mock-up to download a special, hacker version.

I must point out the original, correct version from Adobe does not have such concerns.

Adobe is a safe download I would place them in the same group as Microsoft and Apple for their software download security. Just remember only download from Adobe and not a 3rd person site.

Make sure you are linking from a legitimate site. You might even consider going to Adobe's site, directly and download it from there. It's still free, and you will be able to play flash files from any site that offers them.

Almost everything of the sort is flash based, really... You might be able to get a website that streams through Windows Media player, that could work.
