Read the Book of Daniel to get information on how the exiles were effected. There was no spiritual cost to Daniel as his faith was strong. Daniel and his three friends were exiled at around the age of 15. The bible does not say anything about the emotional cost to them, but you can imagine what it was. The Babyolonian culture was much different from their own, but they stayed strong in their faith.

The Jewish people were never in exile, it is a myth created in the early books of the Torah to give the religion more age, and therefore status. King Nebuchadnezzar is featured in the Hittite Library, the Jews are not. Judaism only came into being circa 700BC, in Egypt, and based their religion on the ideology of Arkhenhaten (Armen Hotepk IV).
