they use your last menstrual period because its really the only way they can get in a ballpark of when you ovulated.....the normal cyle of a woman is 28 days.....they calculate that you ovulate 2 weeks after you started you last period......and considering that your egg is only good for about 24 hours after being released, this is when you become pregnant

Alright, technically, you are not pregnant until sperm meets egg, and conception occurs. That is the actual beginning of pregnancy. However, it takes up to a week after conception for the embryo (the few cells that will become your baby), to implant in the uterine wall. It takes more time, after this, for hormone levels to reach a tracable point, and a positive pregnancy test to be available.
Pregnancy, the 40 weeks of it, are calculated from the first day of your last period before conception. I am not sure why this is, except that it is the easiest way to keep track. If you'd like to know a more approximate date of conception, it is important to know, before becoming pregnant, when you ovulate. Since you are already pregnant, the best information I can give is that most women ovulate around the 14th day of their cycle. So, for an estimated conception date, add 2 weeks to the first day of your last period, and that is probably the best idea of conception you can get for now. However, remember (in case you didn't have sex that day) sperm can survive for up to 5 days in the human body, and eggs for up to 48 hours, and some women ovulate on different days.
Example:The first day of your last period was May 1. You probably ovulated around May 13-15. Sexual intercourse anywhere from May 8 to May 17 may have resulted in pregnancy.
However, just to discover how far along a doctor would consider you, and to answer the questions of friends and family when they ask, you should time it from the first day of your last period. This is also how you find your EDD(Estimated Due Date).

Here's the simple version. You have a period, then the next cycle begins. Lets say it's Sept 1st. After 2 weeks, that's when you ovulate and that's when you get pregnant. Doctors just use the Sept 1st date because it is a positive. You know when that date was. You don't REALLY know when you ovulated. They just guess on that one.
If you had a period after that, you aren't pregnant (in most cases) although some people do have periods during pregnancy (but that's another matter).
Hope it helps.

I'm gonna answer you this by steps so you understand
- time of pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period.
- yes, it means all of us are "pg" to weeks before it actually happening, it's just a medical reading, the drs count 40 weeks from the first period of your lmp, but it doesn't mean you don't need sperm to get pregnant. You get pg when you have sex.
Hope I helped.

Pregnancy is considered 40 weeks... but 2 of those weeks you are not pregnant (those two weeks are the time from the first day of your last period to the time you have sex and conceive the baby... but not everyone ovulates two weeks after their period... thats just an estimate)... so actually you are technically only pregnant 38 weeks... but they consider it 40 (dont ask why... cuz I dont know...)

you are six weeks along according to the calculator. some women spot in the first trimester of pregnancy, so it may not have been a real period. have you been to an ob yet? if not, i suggest you go now. he/she will be able to answer any questions you have about your pregnancy and how it will progress. and no, you were not pregnant before you had sex

pay attention in class or read up on it...
no you can't get pg if you do not have sex.
the only way you can get pg if the sperm fertilizes the egg. and then implants itself in the uterus correctly.
