I mean really. Last time a video game system came out that cost that much, it was called a 3DO I think, and it sucked. :)

But seriously, at that price....why *do* you need to pay more for the larger hard disk and the wireless controllers? And why, *why*, WHY do players still have to deal with that crappy, Four Chiclets of Death crappy standard controller? I rather *liked* the original boomerang design for the PS3 controller....

And more to the point, why PAY through the nose for a video game system when the *standard controller* is anything BUT perfect? Really, maybe I just have these freakishly large, *grown up* thumbs, *lol* but I can't get a *diagonal* to work on a Sony Playstation controller to save my life. Which sucks with arcade style, skills-intensive games that *I generally like to play* because they generally do NOT let you use the analog thumbsticks for alternative control.

So I don't get it. :) Why pay so much for a system that isn't perfect?

Anybody willing to pay $600 for the PS3 unit along is either an idiot with no life, a rich douche that has lots of time on his hands, or some stoner rotting away in his dorm with mommy's credit card, working on his communications degree. I remember when XBOX and Game Cube came out in 2001-2002. My idiot dorm mate waited in line for like 8 hours for each of them. 16 hours wasted to pay roughly $600 for 2 game units that you could get for $400 the next summer, because of competition. Not to mention the idiot bought any game he could find for them, later I found out he bought the GameCube so he could play 1 damn game- some WWF crap. Figures. I agree with you all the way. You just know there is something better coming out after the fact, so what is the point. I am probably going to buy a new xbox soon, because the motor and dvd-rom on my old one is almost shot. But anything new, sorry, no dice.

Because most people will just so that they can say they own a PS3....In my opinion I think it's success will vary because a lot of people are going to dish out 600 bucks for a system that will most likely have the "1st generation" flaws such as what happened with the 360. I'm a gamer by heart but I must say that I'd rather go with Nintendo's Wii than with a PS3 just because of not only the price but the reliability and stability of a Nintendo console. I still want a 360 but I am definitely going to wait a long time before I get a PS3 because I don't want to waste my hard earned money on a system that might fail.

The PS3 is expensive, but it is expensive because it is costly to build. To be precise, each costs over $900 to build. Sony is losing hundreds of dollars on every PS3 it sells.

PS3 is a Blu-ray HD movie player, in addition to being a game console. Some will buy PS3 to watch Blu-ray movies in 1080p HD, which most HD DVD players can not do so far. If you compare the $600 price to $1000 Blu-ray players that are out now, the PS3 would be considered a bargain, and this is assuming that it had no gaming functions.

In fact the basic PS3 is only the 11th most expensive console if you adjust for inflation. The premium version is the 7th most expensive. The Neo-Geo cost about $1000 in today's dollars and its gigantic game cartridges were all over $100, although it was effectively an arcade machine that doubled as a home console. (I had one but sold it)

I did pre-order a PS3, and I will either keep it or sell it at an even higher price, possibly over $1000. Check out ebay auctions.

I doubt that many people will 'get' to pay $600 for a PS3 this year because sony announced that it's only allowing 8 reserves per Gamestop/EB store (in the US). And even if you are one of the 8 that reserve it, that doesn't mean you are getting it on launch day. They aren't getting their full 8 on launch day.
I would assume a similar situation will be at Best Buy and Walmart.
Just a heads up.

Typical Sony being unable to meet production demands.

I've been waiting a long time for the PS3 to come out, and I'll certainly shell out the $600, plus a few more dollars for some games.
