A common name is like "bobcat" or "cougar". Many species have multiple common names that refer to the same species. A species name is like "Lynx rufus", almost always in Latin.
The species name is almost always two words, the Genus (second-lowest level of organism classification) and the species (lowest level of classification). The Genus name is always Capitalized, the species name is always lowercase. When typed, the name should be italicized.
Sometimes the species name is three words, such as "Homo sapien neandratalis" or "Homo sapien sapien". The first example is the most recent (extinct) ancestor to modern humans, the second example is modern humans.
The levels of classification are:
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Genus
species
(and sometimes subspecies, as the examples above illustrate).
There are a couple of phrases that can help remembr the order: "Kings Play Chess On Fine Grain Sand", or "King Philip Came Over From Germany Sick".

Put simply a SPECIES NAME is in Latin and always consists of at least two words, for instance "Homo sapiens." Species names should be written in Italics and are used by scientists to help determine which other organisms it is similar to etc. They are also useful as they are the same in every language so scientists from different countries know they are talking about the same thing.
The COMMON NAME is what we would normally call the organism by, in this case the "Human." Animals can have lots of common names and the common name will be different in different languages.
