There are a few things you can do before trying medication if you wish, but they will make your life more complicated while you get started. The first is to remove all foods with additives from his diet. There was a recent study that actually showed a causal link between food dyes and ADD. There are websites, I'm sure, that will give you good advice on how to start that, but I'm not sure where they are. Try a good search engine for that. The other thing, less restrictive, is try cutting sugar and caffiene from his diet. My daughter is ADD and can't have sugar unless she's going to go run it off somewhere. But she's always done okay in school, and in fact I had to get her re-evaluated in the third grade because her teachers didn't believe me because she wasn't a school problem. Caffiene, on the other hand, tended to calm her down. My nephew was the opposite. Sugar didn't affect him but caffiene sent him climbing the walls. So my advice, try diet and get him a lot of exercise every day. However, if that doesn't work, medication is still an option that has really helped a lot of children and adults.

I watched a programme about a lady with ADHD once. She was prescribed amphetamines as they had the reverse effect and actually calmed her down.

Below is a link to a site which talks about ADHD in adults:
