I have tested a host of Basic compilers such as Speedbasic, FreeBasic etc. Some are capable of creating gui applications but only in the ide mode. Some of them create standalone apps but without gui. Are there any Basic compilers that do both? (powerbasic may handle this...but could not test it since there is no download). Thanks.

FYI, Visual Basic was invented to be the BASIC with GUI interface and GUI programming. Its first generation was Q-Basic that was bundled free with DOS 4.0 & 5.0. It generated Pseudo-code wrapped in EXE layer. It still is the world's most popular programming platform.

I see something called KidBasic on sourceforge.net. Perhaps you should check it out. http://kidbasic.sourceforge.net/
