There should have only been two contenders. Martin O'Neill and Sam Allardyce. They are both superb motivators and get that little bit extra out of players. They also know how to best use the players at their disposal. They are very passionate about the game and stand no nonsense from the so called "prima donnas". If the so called stars were not performing they would have no qualms about leaving them out. I do not think McLaren has a clue. His appointment was a huge mistake. He was Sven's number 2 for at least 5 years and must share some of the blame for the abysmal performances at the World Cup. He did not do a great job at Middlesborough either despite having money to spend. An English team needs an English manager however as I am not convinced a foreign manager fully understands how we play our football nor the mentality of the players.

I wanted Big Sam for the job but now I've had chance to see them play and have a wee think I reckon the best Man for the job is Alec Ferguson. My reasons for this are 1) He's not a yes man and does what he believes is right no matter what the consequences are. 2) He has a proven track record and is one of the most successful managers in the game 3) If (as has been suggested) the players aren't giving their all, i.e Terry, Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand he isn't behind the door about dropping them and replacing them with hungrier players who would welcome the chance to wear the 3 Lions, i.e. Bent, Johnson etc.

Regardless of who the Manager is the team he piks must be the creme de la creme of the Premiership, this is exactly what Mc Claren did, ther was no condemnation by anyone over his choices. The players failed him and also failed the Country with a lack of passion and moreover a lack of wanting to win. The England team are a joke to the rest of the Football World, best we look at the players before we condem the Manager

Three nominees, and they're Big Sam, O'Neill and Terry Venables

Big Sam has quietly built up bolton from just a premiership yoyo club to one capable of mixing it in European Football. Bolton has become something of a convalescent home for some of the game's wayward stars with Allardyce showing great aptitude for harnessing their ability and getting their careers back on track.
It's true that he was never one of the game's greats as a player, but he enjoyed a good career with a host of clubs.

Martin Hugh Michael O'Neill. He went to manage Leicaster City, in 1985, and he transformed the club and impressed all the football pundits by getting the team promoted to the Premiership and winning the League Cup (Carling Cup) the following season.
In 2000 he left for Celtic where he swung the balance of power away from rivals, Rangers, by winning the Scottish Cup in 2001 and 2002. A year later Celtic reached the final of UEFA Cup and in 2004 Celtic won the league and cup double. In August, he was appointed manager of Aston Villa and he was awarded the OBE in 2004. He had a real good time in Aston Villa.

Terence Frederik Venables. He took over as manager of Crystal Palace when they were in the Third Division, he coached them to the Second Division in 1977 and the First Division (now the Premiership) in 1979. After a mid-table finish in 1980 he left for Queens Park Rangers, whom he led to promotion in 1983 and a very respectable 5th place in the First Division the following season. He also guided Rangers to the FA Cup final in 1982 while still a second division side, but lost in a replay against Tottenham Hotspur. His growing reputation bought him offers from some of Europe's most prestigious clubs and in 1984 he took the role of manager at Barcelona, and reached the final of UEFA Champions. He went back to manage Tottenham Hotspurs, and they did win the FA Cup in 1991 and finished 3rd in 1990. His skill in analysis, coaching and motivation resulted in some of England's best ever footballing performances, including a famous 4-1 demolition of the Netherlands, and only ended in the bitter disappointment of losing to Germany on penalties in the semi-final. He helped Middlesbrough avoid relegation as well, in 2000. And, in July 2002, Venables joined Leeds United as manager. By December of that year, the side had crashed out of both the League Cup and the UEFA Cup and were languishing in mid-table.

Pheew. What about Alan Curbishley?
