The Irish Republican Army were formed in response to British occupation and colonisation of Ireland. They used violence as a last resort in response to continous oppression of Ireland. Those here who refer to the IRA as terorists and scum are obviously part of or support the british killing machine in Ireland or just stupid.
In response to the british killing of innocent Irish people and the pillaging of their land, the IRA were formed to put a stop to it as any other country would. The british had no reason other than oppression and greed to take the land away from the Irish.

Get real? Get point for answering questions. Opinion or fact? Plant a bomb? why plant a bomb? what is the reasoning? Is every human built with the
rational to plant a bomb? Omagh, try getting your facts right 1, Omagh was carried out by the RIRA and 2 was executed by the RUC who moved the innocent ppl towards the bomb instead of away from it and who also knew of the bomb 2 days in advance. The british did not only arm and give intellengence to the loyalist paramiliatries but also bombed by proxy using them as well as taking land persecuting Irish ppl and general oppression. I realise they are a terrorist group?, lol, u make me laugh, do u realise that where i live in north belfast i am surround by so called supporters of Ulster who every 12 of july cut the phone and electric lines and attack the place where i live with up to 200 strong mobs, this is what i am talking about, people who hear nothing more than British propaganda on the news.

They use terror? Sure terror is the only thing our history has taught us. From cromwell to paisley. And i like to point out that I hate the PIRA and shin fein for selling my country out to the british and begging on their knees to their british master.
I like to draw a paralell to Islamic terrorists, IRA fight British by any means to defend our land, Islamic extremeists exactly the same. IRA oppressed ppl who form an army to defeat oppressor, Islamic extremeists exactly the same. State collusion by goverments to oppress people of Ireland, state collusion by British/USA/ISRAEL goverments to oppress people of Middle east.
IRA give coded warnings in advance to British. Islamic extremeists give no warning. Thats when you British know your **** from your elbow.

NEWSFLASH - terrior do you live where i live? No u dont. Do you live in a place where the only Irish army has given all their arms to the British at the command of the british no u dont. Do you live in a place that has only one way in and one way out and that way is blocked by so callled gaurdians of Ulster who attack cars, buses, taxis who dare to go that way. No u dont. The IRA has disbanded, give up their arms, so when the UDA, UFF and other arms of the British army/RUC attack us as we go about our daily business what can we do?

I like the way you think blowing up innocent people can ever be justified. Honourable Armies do not deliberately kill civilians to make a point. Terrorists do. The IRA are scum and those who fought in Northern Ireland against the British by bombing places when they knew civilians could/would have been killed are dishonourable to the point of disgust.
You just thank your lucky stars the British Army isn't American or Israelite, as they would have started intentionally blowing up streets and towns, with civilians in, in the hope of getting a few terrorists.
So you claim that the British Army and RUC attack you for no reason while you're going about your daily business? I would refute that but more importantly, you imply that you think a terrorist organisation shouldn't have disarmed and gone for peace, so it could keep killing British soldiers and terrorising people. Have you heard yourself lately? You have some very screwed up opinions.
And you talk about 'your country', that would be the UK would it not? Being N Irish you're part of the United Kingdom, not Eire. 'Your country' is the UK, same country as we British who you despise, whatever you'd like to believe. And also, doesn't N Belfast have a unionist majority?
Now, you're obviously a very racist, nationalist, even fascist individual, due to your adamant support and attempted justification of terrorism, so I'll leave it at that. Still, the IRA are scum.

Maybe they are referred to as scum because they murdered so many innocent people.
You point to the ideals they began with, fair enough, but the whole "pillaging of land" by the English was 150 years ago. When that stopped and the IRA carried on murdering, that is when the IRA lost whatever moral high ground they could have previously laid claim to.
The behaviour of the English at that time was disgusting, and it is a part of British history that is truly shameful, but here's a newsflash for you...
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO COMMITTED THOSE ATROCITIES DIED A LONG TIME AGO!
They cannot be punished any further.
Anybody who would kill people because of their religion, or because they happened to be born on a particular stretch of land cannot claim ANY moral high ground.
One thing that concerns me is that you are bringing up this subject at a time when the problems have receded. Why post this question if not to inflame hatred?
Edited to add, James M - we are aware that the IRA were not the only terrorist organisation, but as the question was about the IRA, that is what the answers have referred to. The UVF, UDA et al could also be legitimately called "scum".

Ok, you believe that.
I know they are terrorists whose main targets were innocent civilians... like the Omagh bomb, the Birmingham bombs, etc. Civilians arent and never will be legitimate targets.... and thats the definitian of terrorism.
The IRA are nothing more than criminals who deal in arms and drugs under the cover of a "political" statement.
The news today has comfirmed that talking sensibly and working hard at peace talks work..... not bombs and guns.
And i do know my facts. And i have been to Ireland many times and have many Irish friends.
I remember when i was a child, an 18yr old un-armed soldier was waiting for a train to go home on leave, at my local station and he was shot dead in the back. The IRA men ran down my street. Thats the cowards they are and were. I have personal knowledge and experience. I also live near Birmingham.... home to the terrorist attacks (and near attacks) that the IRA owned up to.

Ok, so I assume you're Irish and are supporting the IRA. When was the last time the British government blew Irish people to smitherines? When was the last time they killed innocent people whilst shopping in the town centre? When was the last time the blew a pub full of people to pieces? It's all done and dusted now and have the talks not conluded today re Sinn Fein, is this why you're on your high horse? You supporters of the IRA can't seem to forget about it. It's slightly more complicated than just taking land and oppression of Irish people 'because we wanted to'. Maybe we refer to them as scum because they kill innocent people! They're no better than the people who brought about 911! If you don't like the way we refer to the IRA as scum 'here' then go home!!!

The IRA may have begun with such lofty ideals, but in todays world they are little more than a crime syndicate.
Also many of the IRA's victims were totally innocent of any atrocities the just happened to be prominent Irish protestants (try saying that three times after a bottle of Jamesons), or people who fell in love with the wrong person.
Violence does not solve violence, behaving in such a manner brought them as low as the "oppressors" they were trying to vanquish.
Also they committed acts of Terrorism. This makes them terrorists.

Don`t talk such rot! Get your facts straight before you shoot your mouth off. The I.R.A. were never an army. Armies fight `face to face`so each side knows who are theirs and who are not. The Irish terrorists did not show their faces, they hid behind masks like children do when they play. They shot soldiers in the back, they planted car bombs and the like, which killed their own countrymen. They planted bombs in English cities and murdered civilians including children. They were a disgrace to Ireland, and those of us with Irish relatives felt ashamed. Read an `impartial` history of `the troubles` and you will see that there was blame on all sides; as there always is in conflict. I have never heard of the I.R.A, being refered to as scum, I have heard all manner of other names. but never scum.

The only reason they had to stop bombing people was 9/11.
After 9/11 terrorism was no longer acceptable. That's the only reason they stopped. Because they were a bunch of dirty murdering scum terrorists. And now they are dirty murdering scum drug dealers. Does that answer your question?

They are terrorists... they use terror, blowing up innocent civilians. there is no difference between planting a bomb in a shopping centre, and flying a plane into a skyscraper.....except maybe in scale.
you want to consider them freedom fighters?
They use violence and intimidation of their own people - the northern Irish citizens - and have been involved in drug running and training foreign terrorists too (remember those good ol' Irish boys arrested in Columbia in 2001?).
get real, idiot
