If you're talking about that recent outbreak that was on the national news: They said last night (10/12/06) that it was located in one general area (LA, California) and it was ecoli (spelling?) from cow dung. EUWWWWWWWWW! That should make the kids that HATE spinach happy!! On the sad part - they said at least 4 people have died from exposure (eating) this 'fresh salad aka spinach'.

What I have heard is that California has a large number of migrant workers and that they choose to defecate in the spinach fields instead of the toilets. E-coli is present in our intestinal tract and therefore can be a contaminate if found on other items, especially our FOOD!!!

The salenas valley experienced heavy flooding last spring, that is how the contaminated cow manure got into the fields.
They have traced the contamination to three different ranches in that valley.
The farmers were NOT fertilizing their fields with raw cow manure...that is illegal in this country and has been for years. You cannot fertilize food crops with raw manure, it has to be treated.

the lettuce and spinach has e. coli....a bacteria you can only get from fecal matter (poop) so they think it's in the water that waters the plants...so somewhere the pipes have been broken or their watersource (like a river) has been contaminated by animal poop...

if you're talking about the e coli breakouts, its because cow pastures were close to the field where the vegetables were growing. the contaminated manure from the cows got into the soil that grows the vegetables, and when they are harvested, that e coli was still on them.

Well actually the farmers were fertilizing their fields with contaminated manure. It wasn't because the cow pastures were close. My grandfather used to use chicken manure on his garden. He had the best soil I've ever seen.

Sadly to say, this outbreak is from the area in which I live, Monterey, California. Specifically, I believe, from either Salinas, or San Juan Bautista.

because there are bacteria everywhere! Even you have bacteria, and computer you are typing is full of bacteria. If you refer to the E.coli, then it was just announced that they traced it to cow manure.
