EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) - The New York Giants and New York Jets have joined in a partnership to build a new stadium at the Meadowlands.
"As part of a true 50-50 partnership, the Jets and Giants will build the NFL's premier stadium at the Meadowlands," the teams said in a joint statement. "The new Meadowlands will be the premier sports and entertainment destination, anchored by a world class stadium and Xanadu.
"In addition, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority also agreed to acquire sites for both teams to build new state-of-the-art training complexes in New Jersey."
In April, the Giants and New Jersey officials agreed on a deal for the development of a privately financed $750 million stadium, replacing the state-owned Giants Stadium that is also the home for the Jets.
At the time, the Jets were still attempting to build a new retractable roof stadium on the West Side of Manhattan.
After that effort failed, the Jets proposed building a stadium with the Giants that would be integrated with Xanadu, a $1.3 billion retail and entertainment center being built at the Meadowlands.
The Jets were also interested in building a stadium in Flushing, New York, but decided to join in a partnership with the Giants.
The 80,000-seat stadium will be built on an unspecified location very close to the current Giants Stadium and is expected to be ready for the 2009 season.
