I don't think snakes are scary so much as I don't understand their behavior. I am not used to reptiles. The snakes I come upon are in the lawn when I am mowing and I wish I had a better idea of where they are, since I do not want to get near them with the mower.
Some people just get the creeps from snakes and/or spiders. It is probably the vestige of primal fears based on the he need to survive in nature.

When most people hear the word "snake" they immediately think "poisonous" which isn't true. Only a fraction of the snakes native to America are poisonous (including the rattlesnake). It helps to educate oneself on which snakes are dangerous and which are not.
There's also a myth that snakes are slimy. They aren't.

Some are poisonous. Spiders are the same way. Some people are terrified of spiders and not snakes. When I was a child my mother came to take me to the market with her and found me with my playmates playing with a little rattler. She called my father home and he put it in a trash can and cut its head off. Also, when I was even younger, my father brought a garter snake home from his worksite, in the back of our car, but it must have escaped. From then on I was afraid to sit in the back of the "snake car".

Because people don't read enough about snakes. If they researched a little, they would find that snakes are quite inoffensive and wish to be left alone. I think snakes are so cool!

'cause its kinda scary to think that something can move so fast and be so dangerous with no arms or legs. i mean some can swallow a frickin large dog whole. but i love snakes, they're beautiful and amazing creatures.

enough snakes have deadly venom that as children most of us were taught to be wary of them. plus movies and popular culture like to really make them out to be monsters. but some of us know they can be pretty passive, have beautiful markings, and make interesting pets.

They are foreign to the senses. They feel slick (not slimy), plust they look threatening, espcially if they have fangs. If I had to chhose between soft and cuddly no fangs rabbit , and a slick, scaly fanged angry looking snake....give me the rabbit.
