In the "walrus and the carpenter skit" the mother oyster looks at the calendar, and the R in March gets all big and red. So she tells all the oysters not to go with the walrus. What the heck is up with the R? How does she know from that to not go with the walrus?

Sorry, I'm sure not many people have even noticed this...I'm not crazy I promise! Just my random question for the day

Nope you're not crazy. I'm 35 and I love that movie. It makes me laugh everytime I watch it. The mother told the baby Oysters not to go because months with the letter R aren't safe for them.I believe the only months oysters aren't really in season is in the summer ( all months that don't have an r in them.)

By the way --- Can you stand on your head? haha love that line from the Cat, when he takes off his head and stands on it.

The old saying is that one should only eat an oyster during the months spelled with an "R". This, historically, was more preventative medicine than culinary discretion. Summer months bring warmer waters and warmer waters bring spawning oysters and higher bacteria counts. While today there is nothing really wrong with a spawning oyster, they are a bit "creamy" in appearance, texture and flavor .

Mother Oyster recognizes that March is a good month for eating oysters and as she doesn't want her children to be eaten, she advises them to stay with her.

Check out this question and reponse--

Which letter glowed red on Mother Oyster's calender?

R. The month was March, and rumor has it oysters are caught mostly in months that have "R" in their names. I'm not sure if that is true, but it was interesting to me.

Oysters are best to eat during months that have the letter "R" in them. It would be dangerous for her babies to leave the oyster bed during that month because they are more likely to get harvested! I love that movie, by the way! It's one of my favorites! Right now i'm reading the book! It's so funny!
