Some trace the infamy of the number 13 back to ancient Norse culture. In Norse mythology, the beloved hero Balder was killed at a banquet by the mischievous god Loki, who crashed the party of twelve, bringing the group to 13. This story, as well as the story of the Last Supper, led to one of the most entrenched 13-related beliefs: You should never sit down to a meal in a group of 13.
Another significant piece of the legend is a particularly bad Friday the 13th that occurred in the middle ages. On a Friday the 13th in 1306, King Philip of France arrested the revered Knights Templar and began torturing them, marking the occasion as a day of evil. Check out this site to learn more.
Both Friday and the number 13 were once closely associated with capital punishment. In British tradition, Friday was the conventional day for public hangings, and there were supposedly 13 steps leading up to the noose.
Ultimately, the complex folklore of Friday the 13th doesn't have much to do with people's fears today. The fear has much more to do with personal experience. People learn at a young age that Friday the 13th is supposed to be unlucky, for whatever reason, and then they look for evidence that the legend is true. The evidence isn't hard to come by, of course. If you get in a car wreck on one Friday the 13th, lose your wallet, or even spill your coffee, that day will probably stay with you. But if you think about it, bad things, big and small, happen all the time. If you're looking for bad luck on Friday the 13th, you'll probably find it.

Dont wanna name names Gigs but some people just talk way too much!! Friday the 13th is said to be unfortunate for many reasons. The two main reasons are the arrest of the knights templar by King Phillip the fair of france in the 14th century which occured on a friday 13th and they were tortured and killed for heresy. The second reason is for the 13 people who sat at the table during the last supper. The 13th being Judas iscariot who then went to betray Jesus which led to his capture by the romans on a Friday. Thats it!!!

Friday is an unlucky day because it was the day of Jesus Christs crucifixion; it is accordingly a fast-day in the Roman Catholic Church. apparently “Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit on a Friday, and died on a Friday.”
The number 13 is again of religious origin, the 13th apostle was Judas, the one who sold the information to the Romans for a few pieces of silver of thee whereabouts of Jesus. subsequently Jesus was arrested and taken away.
Friday has got long associations with the maritime world as well, it is also considered to be the 6th day of the week, and the number 6 is again connected to the dark side. The Navy had a lot of problems with the sailors in the old days as because of superstition so much time was lost. So they decided to try and put an end to this, they built a new ship. Laid the keel on a Friday, launched the ship on a Friday, named the ship Friday, and even the first mate was called Friday. They press ganged a crew to work the ship, and she set sail on a Friday on her maiden voyage. Hurrah!!! You know what's coming next lol, yup, never ever saw the ship or it's crew again!

I think it's because a lot of bad and unlucky things happened on friday the 13th and around the number 13 so everyone believed it was unlucky.
I have yet to have a really unlucky day on friday 13th but today my supervisor who is a great person is leaving our dept to work else where. :( I don't think this happened because it's friday the 13th.
Hope that helps.
Here's a extra link just for the hell of it.

I heard because back in the days of the crusades, they did a massive killing and burning of priest and such holy man on Friday the 13th, marking it forever unlucky! Also, in some cultures, some believe its the day the dead can come back and walk among the living!

It is unlucky more because of the number than the day. 13 is considered unlucky because there were 13 steps on a gallows ladder. Also according to christians there were 13 people at the last supper and according to Norse myth there were 13 people at the feast were Baldr died.
