This is from India, the elephant must also face an exit, but I'm not sure why.

It would be worse to have crab pinchers for hands, because if you had an elephant nose, you'd still have your hands, but you'd have the added benefit of being able to do things with your nose.

Actually it's a superstition from India. I think it's a similar superstition to hanging a horseshoe right side up, so the luck doesn't run out.
