Constructive criticism can be a positive thing - and most people take to this - it just depends how it is phrased.
e.g. That was good and can be made better by . . .

Destructive criticism can be negative and devastasting.

It may be in the way that its delivered to them. The truth hurts or so they say. If its constructive critisism given in the nicest possible way then i think most people will listen without getting their back up. But i think for alot of people they dont like having to face up to the fact that other people are seeing their imperfections and focusing on them. We know we have imperfections but we like to be the only one who knows about them

Some people can't take criticism because it means that they're not perfect and perhaps they were raised to believe they are. Others may not like criticism in the form it is given; like if it's given in a sarcastic way. Some people may not believe that the criticism is correct.

They are insecure. Also unsolicited criticism is something people get defensive about.I'll be honest,if someone comes up and criticizes me,when I've not asked for any criticism, they're going to get blasted. No one has the right to come up to someone and just criticize.I mean who made you or whoever the critic police? On the other hand,if I ask someone what they think about me or something I say or do or look, then I best be prepared for the answer and take it like the grown up woman I am.
