The jails are full and are costing us a fortune,so why not get a big ship, fill it with crims and sail out to the middle of the sea and chuck em overboard,a lot cheaper and a good dissenentive not to do crime?

Foreign criminals should be repatriated to a jail in their own country and their family should be fined then deported too for not advising them to stay out of trouble. If the whole family has to suffer they might think twice about doing illegal activities. British born criminals should be given a mandatory whipping for any offence....more lashes for more serious crimes. Their families should be fined and the money given to the victim or victim's family....if they cannot afford the full fine all the family have to do community service to pay off the debt. Family being mother, father, brothers and sisters, husbands, wives and children above the age of 12.

Maybe the embarrassment of the whole family being punished might encourage parents to discipline the culprit and to be more strict in the upbringing. Plus pressure from siblings not to cause them trouble would be extra incentive.

British jails are bursting at the seams, and the solution should be to firstly only imprison people who are a real threat to society and who would not benefit from a community based punishment, and to educate prisoners. Over half of our prison population can't read or write properly, so have little hope of a job when they get out, even if they learn practical skills. Sadly, the enterprising skills many of them showed in their crimes shows they aren't stupid, so there is scope for educating long term prisoners. Prisoners DO work already. They are paid a wage in credits, with which they can buy "luxuries" like cigarettes etc and phone cards. The work also has a cash value (an extremely low value) which can be paid to them when they are released. A prisoner with hopes of getting out may save it up. Someone like Rose West probably opts to buy fags.

Well, that is a bit harsh really.

I've read all your answers, and it is really an overwhelming drug issue (crack / smack) that seems to be the overriding reason for prison sentences - both as users and sellers. Even those sentenced for violence are often under the influence at the time, so the proportion of those inside is even higher then it seems. I say mandatory sentences for dealing heroin (which to me seems to be the real problem in life), like 20yrs? That would separate the men from the boys, then supply would surely go down , and so usage of drugs would eventually curtail, and the secondary effect would surely be lower crime rate / and therefore a lower prison population.

Sail them out to the disused oil rigs and let them get on with it, empty the women's prisons of those that are there for non-violent crimes, eg: non-payment of TV licenses, and put the men in them - and make prison a deterrent - there seems to be an awful lot of residavists for prison to be 'harrowing experience' too cushy by half some of them

Why not introduce chain gangs as in USA a few decades ago? It would free up prison space, they could genuinely make some contribution giving something back to society by doing jobs nobody else wants to do.

Yes, I know there's the option of community service, but that is only for less serious criminals and is no real deterrent anyway. A friend of mine was caught drink-driving and he ENJOYED his community service.

How do you answers this one....... Blair says crime is going down and they also say that judges are dishing out more lenient sentences, so if both these things are true then why are our jails full ? well the truth is that we know judges are giving out more lenient sentences and we know the jails are full so it's good old Tony who is lying through his teeth because crime is Not going down. So we should put Blair on this big ship along with all these crims (who are non existant according to Blair ) and capsize it well out to sea.

Deport all and any criminals who are not UK nationals (those here illegally or on temporary visas) and then if necessary build more prisons.
The government and judiciary need to get tougher not more lenient, criminals must be punished. Impose proper sentences where life means life, get rid of open prisons, get rid of computers, tv's, stereos etc in cells. Prison should be a punishment not a hotel, anyone who has committed a crime worthy of imprisonment has I believe voluntarily given up their human rights (befor the pc liberals start pleading hardship).
Jamaica is bringing back corporal punishment (giving criminals 10 lashes of a "cat o nine tails"), not such a bad idea in my opinion.

As there are apparently 11,000 'immigrants/asylum seekers' in our prisons, I suggest that these people did not come to this country to contribute to our economy, society or culture. It is more likely that as previously established criminals they came here to escape arrest, imprisonment in their own countries, or even the death penalty. We should deport them all. There is also the argument that life in a British prison is healthier and more enjoyable than trying to exist in some impoverished 'Third World Country' [most definitely not a Developing Country!] but not a way to contribute to our economy, society or culture.

Deport all foreign prisoners, with no money incentive. Bring back capital punishment for Murders, serial rapist, paedophiles. Persistent criminals given community sentences in third world countries, so they will see what real hardship is and they mat actually repay society.

I think most of the prison inmates are directly or indirectly result of drugs crime. By controlling drug crimes Gov. can effectively control prisons.
