Disconnect the battery first.Then the two 3/8 bolts(9/16 socket)then the batt. cable&st. wire.

Good advice so far. My 84 Caprice with a 305 had a brace bolted to the frame that needed to be removed so there was room for the starter to drop out. There should also be a support bolted to the back of the starter.

it's kinda tricky with the exhaust in the way. and the heat shield attached. But the main two bolts are 9/16 in size.take them off first. provided that you have already taken the battery loose.with the two main bolts out you can get a better look at the screws that connect the starter to the wiring harness.simply take the two screws loose and angle the starter straight up and down and wiggle it past the exhaust system.

The starter is typically bolted to the engine with two bolts, you will need to remove them. Then disconnect the battery cable, and start-signal wires. Voila, your starter is removed!

jack the car up first, safely then the above answer is correct, also unhooked the negative battery cable first and hook up the negative cable last......prevents you from taking a quick inroduction to welding
