I agree plus if you don't like the store they get it from then your disappointed spending it. If you had cash you would have never run into that problem.

I always thought the purpose of a gift card was so that it forces you to buy something you want, rather than spending the money on bills or whatever else. If someone gives you a gift card to a store you hate they clearly don't know you, or you're not creative enough to find something you could use in that store. I think it's just as impersonal as cash, but I like both. People you love always stress about what to get you, and it usually ends up a huge disappointment for both parties. As far as taxes go, if someone gives you cash or a gift card, you still have to pay taxes on your purchase so uncle Sam always gets his cut.

I agree that gift cards are stupid. When you think you're actually getting $50, you're getting less than that because of taxes. Someone once gave me a gift card to a store I hate, so the money was wasted anyway. Cash is by all means not impersonal and more practical than a gift card because it goes a longer way.

First of all, giving cash is impersonal. Even giving a gift card can be construed that way and I don't unless there's a good reason; otherwise, I try to be thoughtful enough to select an actual gift. But the advantage of gift cards is that they give the receiver permission to splurge on themselves and sometimes people need that. For example, I have a friend who has two kids and a big mortgage. If for some reason I gave her cash for her birthday, she'd just end up putting it in her account and paying bills with it... if I gave her a gift card to a store I *know* she loves and never allows herself to shop at, at least I know she's going to get something for HER for her birthday.

IMPERSONAL! If someone is worth buying a gift for, go buy a gift. Don't grab a card off the shelf, tell the cashier 50$, and sign your name on it. Why even bother?

Giving money is non-personal....if you give a gift card get a VISA gift card, that way you can use it anywhere, and put at least $100 on it, cant really get anything below that.

I don't like gift cards because they're not personal. If I were to buy a gift for one of my friends, I would buy something that I know she likes. If I have a friend who likes reading, I'd buy her a book; If someone likes clothes, I'd buy them clothes and so on.

guy: humorous tee blouse, guitar %. or strap, reckoning on what interest he performs you will get him some form of accessory. make it some thing mor very own than a modern-day card. lady: want extra archives...if she is girly--> physique spray, creams, jacket/blouse...it surely relies upon on what she is like/likes
