I love this movie, i was watching it today and i thought of a few questions just to "kill time":
1. would you have liked to see children from other countries? (there was 2 from England and 2 from USA) i would have liked to see one from Asia and maybe a Latino too.
2. why is Willie Wonka's skin so pale? it almost looks gray....
3. what's Willie's nationality? is he supoused to be British?
4. the chocolate river... what do you think it was really made of? (i don't think they melted all that chocolate to film the movie)
5. why didn't the news reporters come to Charlie's house when he found the Golden Ticket?
6. do you think Willie Wonka did all that on purpose to teach those bratty kids a lesson?
7. which is your favorite song in the movie? mine is the one the oompa loompas sang when Augustus Gloop fell in the chocolate river.
8. do you think Willie is a bit crazy, or is he just pretending?

1. Yes. Kids from other countries would have been great, but that's not the way Roald Dahl wrote it.
2. Because he's shut up in his factory in a perpetually-snowy town all the time.
3. Technically, yes, he'd be British, but they really wreak continuity havoc with that. You'd have to check the book to be really sure, and it might not say either. Roald Dahl was British.
4. Brown-tinted water. =)
5. Because he found the Golden Ticket just a few hours before the event, they didn't have time to.
6. Um, yes. DUH! (quoting Mike Teevee)
7. I didn't like any of the songs much.
8. No, Willie's mad as a hatter. It's what makes him great. Check the look on his face again when Mike Teevee says "Why is everything in this place completely pointless?!?" And Charlie says to him, "Because it's candy. It doesn't have to have a point." And they show Willie's face. He's crazy all right, crazy like a fox.

I look forward to your discussion group questions for Nanny McPhee! =)

1. In the first draft of the book, Charlie was black! Maybe Dahl changed it so it wouldn't look like he was trying to make some kind of statement by doing that...I wouldn't want to see children from other places in the movie because that would deviate from the book. And I think Dahl chose the kids he knew best, American and English ones, to write about.

2. Willy hasn't been outside in years, of course he's a little pasty.

3. Willy is probably meant to be British, but it's not really specified.

4. The chocolate river was apparently a mix of water, dietary cellulose for viscosity and various food dyes.

5. I don't think reporters had enough time to find Charlie - the tour was the very next day.

6. Willy Wonka was looking for an heir, first - bratty kids getting their comeuppance was just icing on the cake.

7. I like the Gloop song best too - maybe it's just the word Gloop.

8. Like many creative geniuses, I think Willy is a bit crazy.

1.Actually one was from England. Veruca Was from England and Augustus was from Germany.
2. He was pale from lack of sunlight after he closed the facotry 15 years ago.
3. He's probably British but lost the accent.
4.The chocolate river and water fall was made from fake chocolate. About 250,000 gallons if fake chocolate was used for the river and waterfall. They didn't say what they used to make it.
5. Maybe Charlie didn't want to be in the news and the tour was on day away from when he found it so there wasn't enough time for reporters to come.
6.Yes he did
7.Mine is the Augustus Gloop song too. I'm watching it right now
8.The directors said that Oompa-loompas can make anyone crazy

I have not seen the new movie and do not care to. The original is one of my favorites though and I highly recommend it.

As for the nationalities of the children, that is how the story was written. It is not right to change that just to make the story politically correct. A movie should follow the novel it is based on as much as possible.

In the book, Charlie found his ticket one day before the deadline. The reporters were busy vying for space in front of the factory and did not have time to get to Charlie.

And yes, Willie Wonka was teaching the brats a lesson.

Willie Wonka is not really crazy, but he is very eccentric.

1. It was based on the book, so they would have had to change it completely to accommodate everyone.
2. It was probably a decision by Tim Burton to make him that pale.
3. I think he might be any nationality you wish him to be.
4. Not sure
5. It wan't in the book.
6. No, they did it to themselves as a morality lesson. Agian it is based on the book.
7. The same as your pick.
8. He isn't crazy, just eccentric.

To sum up, this movie version is the closest to the book, so there are some things that could not be changed. The only change was why Wonka was the way he was. The idea about his father was not in the book. The original movie was not that close to the book. That is why Roald Dahl did not like that version.

The original book was written by a British author and the first film starring Gene Wilder was shot with a mainly British cast. Willie Wonka himself was supposed to be British. I imagine his skin was shown as very pale because he hadn't been outside the factory in a very long time. And yes, he allowed all those things to happen to the children on purpose. It was to teach them a lesson in civil behaviour, because they were all brats (except for Charlie).

1-Mike and Violet are from America, Verruca is English and Augustus is German.
2-He never leaves his factory
3-In the original movie they wanted the chocolate factory and charlie to be from a "nowhere" place. it was filmed in Germany, though. Charlie and Willy are supposed to be from no where.
4-Dirty water...very cold dirty water
5-There wasn't enough time
6-No...the kids did it all themselves. he tried to stop them...they didn't listen.
7-the oompa loompa brat song
8-he wasn't crazy...he was eccentric

Wille Wonkas skin was so pale because he never left the factory. He stayed in. As for the others I dont know, but you made a good point about the media not going to see charlie.
