I most of the time talk to myself in my mother tongue - Turkish. Sometimes, I talk in English though which is my second language.

My native language is English, but I also speak some Spanish. I have noted that I ordinarily think about what I'm saying or going to say in English, but when in a Spanish speaking situation, I find myself thinking in Spanish. I suspect my brain is in effect rehearsing what I might say or should say before I actually say it.
I note someone wondered also how deaf people might think in a language, not having heard one. But deaf people can read languages, so I suspect they can see the words in their mind rather than hear them (where most of us can otherwise do both) and if preparing to sign, they can see the signs in their "mind's eye" as well.

of course you need a language to talk to yourself. How else would you understand what you mean. When you think a thought in your head, isnt it in a language that you understand? I speak only english, therefore i think and talk to myself only in english (well i also speak another language my sister and i made up as a kid hehe, but i dont think or talk to myself in that language). More interesting question is with multi-lingual people, which language do they think or talk to themselves in? probably the one that was either their first language or that they are more comfortable with.

I've thought of that same question. I think in English, but I have a disabled brother who doesn't speak much and doesn't know a lot of language, so I wonder how he thinks. My grandmother, who is Domincan, says she thinks in Spanish, but can speak in both english and spanish. Probably people think in their native language, or use pictures.

I talk to myself in English. Most of the time, I'm talking inside my head but there are occasions when I do it out loud. (And then I say to myself ... why are you talking out loud! lol)

I've often wondered how deaf people "think" about things. It must be very abstract without words.

I talk to myself in English and it's not that common for me because my mother tongue is Spanish. English just makes it easier for me to express myself, and I talk to myself several times a day, out loud when I'm alone and in my head otherwise.
