When? before the civil war? Who sold them into slaves in the first place? Before they ever crossed the Atlanic to come to the US? The white man may have had the ships but he sure as heck didn't go into the bush and capture them. They were sold to him. Blacks were property and as such any loss meant a loss of money to their owner. The life was not great, it was hard, it was not freedom. However, the civil war was not a war to free the slaves, it was a war about state's rights. Did you know that the Emancipation Proclamation ONLY freed the slaves of the south? Bet not, most people don't.

Then the Civil Right's Movement. I think that was good. It shouldn't matter what the color of your skin is, you're a person and deserve the same rights as anyone else. However, I feel that movement has created a backlash. In schools, work places and the community people can form black groups, hispanic groups, , chinese groups, but the white person cannot form a group without being called a racist. Is that right? I also feel that the term African-American, Chinese-American and so on tend to create a rift between the different groups. It seems to me that you are either a US American or you are not. It is ok to celebrate and be proud of your heritage, but don't throw it in other people's faces. Maybe I should call myself a Overheight Challeged Female American, would that work? Sounds kinda silly doesn't it. {lol} Today, the black American or African-American has the same freedoms as the rest of the US citizens. Whether they take advantage of those freedoms is up to each individual, just as is it up to everyone. I can sit at home and whine about everything or go out and do something about my life. Ya know, I am considered a minority, being a female. I never thought of using it to get ahead, I worked very hard to get to where I am today and that is what each of us has to do to enjoy the freedom that we have been given. I glossed over a lot of the history, but your question left a lot to be desired.
