All the answers you have so far are pretty accurate. Swingers aka the lifestyle, are in open relationships with their partner and have others they also have relationships with. Swingers consider having sex with someone other than their wife or significant other as recreational sex and have no other intent than sex.
Polyamorus couples develop relationships with other similar couples and often live together sharing the costs of taking care of the house hold and raising any children. The adults are allowed to sleep with whom ever adult they wish. It often works out very well as some of the women involved may be desirous of taking care of children meaning that when the children come home from school there will be an adult at home to care for them. Other of the women may have careers and enjoy working and helping supplement the house hold.
Both of these arrangement are good...however the big killer is JEALOUSY. You cannot be jealous of your partner at all if you want this to work. If you and your partner are not in a good stable relationship I do not advise you try this. If you are in a stable relationship it most likely will make you and your partner even closer and more loving towards each other.
