Groupthink is a mode of thought whereby individuals intentionally conform to what they perceive to be the consensus of the group.

That being taken as a definition from wikipedia, I would say would groupthink would be good in various settings where you would want to avoid hysteria or chaos, i.e., a movie theater but given corporate talk, it kills individuality and creativity at any given time!

The best example I can think of is parenting. Particularly when the child is in the presence of the parents, it is critical for parents to present a united front regardless of disagreements. Of course, when the child isn't around, all bets are off, and group think becomes bad again.

tough question. if an org is trying to implement changes, you need group buy-in to make it successful. guess that's one way "groupthink" can be positive (for the org, at least) Anywhere that you're trying to build consensus.

I suggest you check out the book: Freakonomics- it explains some of why it's sometimes good and sometimes not. Most importantly it explains why the consensus view is often better than experts at predicting future events.
