If you want to wear a dark or vibrant red lipstick but don't want your lips to look as full as they are naturally, try this: When putting on foundation, also cover your lips so your natural lip line blends in with the rest of your skin. Using lip liner, trace a line around your lips slightly inside your natural lip line. Then fill your lips with your lipstick. If done right, it will look like your lips are actually a different shape.

One suggestion is to dab on a regular red lipstick very lightly & dilute it w/ lip balm for a natural, daytime look.

For evening, you can use more lipstick w/ just a touch of lip balm to soften and blend the edges a bit for a more dramatic look without a harsh outline around your lips.

By using lip balm to blend, you can adjust the amount of emphasis on your lips without lipliner.

Another idea is to try a tinted gloss or sheer red lipstick. You'd get the impact of red but with a softer, more natural look. These formulas are less intimidating and can help you get used to wearing red.

Revlon makes an excellent lip gloss called Cherries in the Snow which is an easy to wear red that flatters many skin tones.

Benefit has some good sheer red lipsticks.

Clinique's Almost Lipsticks are easy to wear but have little staying power. However, the colors are so pretty they are worth considering.

If you want a red, but don't want it to scream too much attention to your lips, then a nice lip stain or lip sheer is what you need. Tarte makes some nice lip sheers in flattering red shades, and Bobbi Brown also has a few nice sheer reds. Sue Devitt, who is a master at color, also has a very nice red for this season which is a full lipstick, but the red is such a soft, flattering red, you will like it. It's called Great Australian Bright, and a very nice sheer, shimmery red lip gloss called Mannama. These are available on sephora.com and in the store.

It's all about the intensity of the red. Try applying a sheer coat with a lip brush and build up colour slowly until you find the right intensity. If you want a softer look try lipgloss with a red tint. Luckily many lipsticks have several mixed colours - coral red, orange red, pink red - just try some out on your hand in a cosmetics store and see which look best on your fair skin on your hand. Hope this helps :)

I have fairly large lips too, what i do is put a layer of the shade of red i like. I then pat my lips with a tissue so that the red is not so intense. My last step is to put clear lip gloss or lip balm over the lipstick.

some tips:
-use a color that compliments your skin and hair color
-don't wear too much eye makeup at the same time. you'll end up looking like a whore! a little bit of mascara and maybe some LIGHT eyeliner does the trick. i usually find i can't wear any eyeshadow, unless it is skin tone or a subtle color.
-let your lips pop and be proud!

If you're concerned about looking "clownish" with red lipstick, try this.

Line just inside your natural lipline with a red lip pencil. Fill in with the same pencil, then use your finger to tap on a matte red lipstick OVER the pencil. Blot with a tissue and skip the gloss.

Beautiful, long-lasting and not at all garish.

Find a red that matches your skin tone, not all reds work with everyone, and do not match your lipstick to your clothing, it looks tacky, red can look good with black, brown, pink, green, anything, just be careful. Don't use a liner, use concealer around your lips to make it look a little more natural.

I have the same problem! If you use darker lipstick, it will help, but don't go too dark or it will no longer be Red! I say try the color "Fiery Russet" by Estee Lauder. It's about $13-15 but if it is a good color it's worth it!

If you don't like that one, try other reds on at a department store counter and cough up the $$ for the color you like. Drug stores can't offer you that... Good luck!

The darker your lipstick, the smaller your lips look. Only wear red lipstick with red clothes, and your lipstick has to exactly match your clothes.
