I would have lost my job if it was me. Work is no place to put up with that kind of stuff. I would have beat the breaks off his a s s.
But since everyones different my advice to you is go to your boss about the incident and tell him what happened. Good Luck.

To tell you the truth, I would have leaned close to him and said, "OK, Chis-with-a-'K', now listen to this, you call me that again and I will drop you dead on your tracks, and if you so much as raise your eyebrows, let alone your voice, you will not get home alive today... is that understood, 'Chris-with-a-K'?"
I said that once to someone taller than me who had started to work that morning and was offended that a minority member was asked to instruct him... and he laughed after he called me a derogatory name and said that he's "never encountered an intelligent one..." I took out my wallet and showed him my old Faculty ID card from when I taught at a senior college, along with my Notary Commission and a few other IDs, and I said in a low tone of voice, "Yes, go ahead and enjoy your last laugh on Earth but call your wife and kids and say good bye!" There was a really tall guy that used to work with us, 6' 9" and he went over to him and said, "Man, you REALLY don't know who you just messed with, do you?" The idiot left before our coffee break, and never came returned.

That's nuts. I would have been totally pissed, but I would have been cool as ice. Luckily, I'm a nurse, so when I do run across racist people who wanna act 'funny', comfort and relief......OR pain and misery......are at times literally in MY hands. So......I have had the privilege of HUMBLING alot of ignorant azz people.
But what I usually do, is in a FIRM, STRONG, COMMANDING voice, CORRECT THE HELL OUT OF THEM in an assertive, VERY ASSERTIVE WAY. And let them know that they WILL respect me or they can leave the establishment and get service elsewhere. I have a mean streak when angry, so when I'm 'cold', you can FEEL it.
But, my boss is cool too. She doesn't allow that whatsoever. No emotional abuse what so ever. If anyone acts dumb......we are given the green light to handle it in a verbal professional, but CLEAR way, and we are backed up if anyone wants to 'write a letter' or make a 'complaint'
Go into nursing.....that mess will calm down QUICK when the only thing standing between them and their pain medicine is YOU! =)

That is a rough question. It sounds like your 'Kris' is, to begin with, a real a*ole. I would document this incident and inform HR about it so that when he does it again he can start to receive the rewards of his crappy attitude.
Breaking his legs, while very satisfying, will not teach him the lesson that an efficient HR dept can.
Addendum:
While I was composing this answer, a lot of other folks advised you to speak directly to this fellow. Don't do that, let management handle direct contact with this jerk.
Also, go to YOUR supervisor, not his, _and_ keep HR informed of the situation.

For now tell your supervisor. If he laid an N bomb because you misspelled his name he is a huge ****** and deserves to be taken off the planet but not by you. We need to keep the good ones on the outside of jail. Refuse to interact with him because nothing good can come from interaction with a person like that. Racism is stupid but it becomes an assault when you use it to hurt innocent people. His life will be his punishment. White trash ******.

I think that I would talk to a supervisor......now only should he not being calling you a n**** but calling you stupid is really not acceptable in the work place. He shouldnt be speaking to anyone like that. If you confront him yourself it may only cause more problems so I would suggest letting a supervisor handle the situation

That feeling is absolutely normal but the fact that you didn't act on it speaks highly of you.
Never react in ignorance to an ignorant person. I would have simply told him " I don't feel comfortable assisting you right now let me see if my co-worker can help you" and walked away.
Even though that was directing to you (personaly) always remember to leave personal issues at home.
Maybe if you would have told your boss, his service could have been rejected and he would have felt like az.
Now if you see that az on the street I say show him how n i gg az act. LOL!!!

You do not, under any circumstances, need to put up with such blatent racism! I would have called my supervisor and explained that I would not tolerate it and if this person wanted help he was going to have to find it elsewhere....I'm glad you did not break his legs, he would have just looked at it through racist eyes and assumed that all people of color are violent.
I'm so sorry.

You are very wise to not have attacked him or done him bodily harm.
I probably would have said something to my boss.
Acts of racism are used for the uneducated mind.
I would have done the same spelling error.
Next time, just stand up and tell him you will take no such abuse,'You ****** white cracker'

that guy that said that is obviously an ignorant racist pig. if you wanted to you could probably sue him for racism if u wanted too. i'd check with someone else but you could. either way racism is horrible. people like that have no excuse for their actions. i'd spell chris the same way u did. if you think sueing him is too extreme or something talk to your boss. that guy certaintly won't say stuff like that to you ever again.

I would report him to his supervisor.
If you feel that you absolutely need to talk to him about this, I would suggest that you remain very professional and simply tell him something like, "When you spoke to me about the spelling of your name, you were extremely unprofessional. If you speak to me that way again, I will report you to management."
I would also suggest that you write down exactly what he said to you, with the date and the time that he said it and continue to document any other incidents like that. If he does this two or three more times, take your documentation to your supervisor.
