Ian, im a decorator and i use these types of methods all the time, the cheapest is household bleach mixed with warm water, in a 5 water 1 bleach ratio, either spray it on or sponge it on, but if you spray use a mask it can severly damage your lungs if not, or if you dont mind spending about 6 pound you can go into a hardware store and buy a spray, Thompsons have a good 1, that will remove the mildew and it really does prevent it, but it depends what you want to do and money, but either way use a mask, next you have to work out where the problem is coming from, to prevent it, your extractor fan might not be working, if you dont have 1, i sugest that you tell the missus to have the window open a tad when showered, or when she has her turkish steam bath, good luck

Vodka, seriously.
"2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a Trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five Minutes and wash clean. The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew."...

simple plan: vinegar. jsut spray vinegar on the area. wait about 5 minutes and clean off. for a quicker plan, steam up the bathroom and then spray the vinegar. the heat will make the vinegar work faster.
it works great.
also great for cleaning the filter of a coffee maker.

Yeah, they sell cleaners that kill mildew. They smell awful and aren't good for you, so make sure to ventilate well when you spray, but they will solve your problem right quick.
