Depends how bad they are. Believe it or not, a bathroom cleaner (CIF) is excellent at cleaning all sorts of things. If it is brass, it literally takes all the hard work out of polishing. Just a light rub with some brasso finishes them off.
EDIT - Sorry, I meant Cillet Bang (Bathroom not the general kitchen one)
