Most refrigerators use the freezing compartment to cool the refrigerating compartment as well. Why do most refrigerators place the freezing compartment on top not bottom or on the side?

For the same reason as nearly all cookers have the hotplate or burner underneath the saucepan, instead of above it - the hot air rises, and gets replaced by cooler air which heats up and rises too. In the refrigerator, the cooled air around the freezer compartment falls, and gets replaced by slightly warmer air which then cools down and falls too.

I hadn't noticed this to be the case. My own refrigerator has the freezer section on the left side, not on the top. I have had many that have the top/bottom arrangement, but I've noticed that the freezer section of those is usually too small for my needs. Maybe it is just a design artifact for those refrigerators that don't have as large a freezer compartment. Oh yes, I used to have an older refrigerator/freezer setup in my youth that had the freezer on the bottom. This was a very old style with the heavy latches and metal construction. It worked pretty well, as far as I can remember; my folks got rid of it in the 1970's.

one reason maybe, its for children's protection. when they are small, they love to hide and seek, to avoid any devastation for young one to froze to death like that, the company maybe thinking for the young children's benefit. the side freezer compartment is too small to have a young child play with. then, with those larger freezer available on the store now these days are all having a lock for safety.

plus, it is better to have the coldest part at upper level to avoid bending, that will hurt your back lifting those big or heavy frozen bags. also, maybe the design is appropriate for the motor to be higher up from the ground? just a thought..

It's a conspiracy. The ice cream makers want their product at eye level and bribe the manufacturers to make sure it happens!
