Go to your favorite L&G center and buy one of the following: Neem Oil (Marketed by Bonide as Rose 3in1 Rx), horticultural oil, or insecticidal soap. My favorite is neem oil because it also has fungicidal properties. There are no poisons in these. They work by coating the insect with oil or soap and they suffocate. Since there is no poison you must hit the insects with the spray. Spray the bottoms and tops of the leaves twice a week for three weeks. That should get the adults, larva, and eggs. I put some aluminum foil around the stem to keep the oil from getting in the soil. For normal sprayings this precaution is not needed but you are going to be doing an intense spray schedule to eradicate a stubborn pest. Remove foil after each spray.

Use a systemic pesticide.
Mealybugs live around the plants roots as well as on the leaves.
There is no use spraying with a normal contact pesticide.

Imidochlraprid is a non toxic chemical that will move around in the sap of a plant and only kill insects that are sucking the sap out. This stuff is also the main ingredient in advantage flea treatments for cats as it flows through the cats blood and kills fleas when they bite.

In Australia this chemical is marketted as Confidor.

Spray your whole garden with it if you can, i do mine about every 3 months.

Since they're house plants, buy "Bug Stop" at the hardware store. I've found it at Ace. Spray in every corner of the house and around the foundation. The directions say to spray 3 ft out from the house, but they just want you to go through more of it. Also, spray outside around every door and window you can reach. All bugs in your house should be dead within a day. Happy hunting!

You can purchase an aerosol spray for this purpose, but in my experience, several applications were ineffective to stopping the infestation. Mealybugs are hard to control. In the end I gave up and the plant died. I actually read somewhere that hand-picking them off the plant is effective. Pour yourself a cup of tea and turn mealybug picking into a pastime. Good luck.

Best and cheapest way is to spray or swab them directly with 70% alcohol. You have to do it about three times, every 7 days to catch all the babies hatching out. Just be sure to take the plant out of the sun before you spray it.

not sure if it'll work for mealybugs, for for ants I put the plant into a big tub and flood the entire pot it for water for about a day.

This has always solved my ant problem, perhaps it'll work the same way for these bugs.
