MSNBC Breaking News: A.P.: U.S. Army making plans to keep current Iraq troop level through 2010.
The Bush Administration has the wrong strategy for Iraq. Deadlines continue to be extended, and the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate. The overwhelming majority of Americans want a new direction in Iraq, but this administration is laying plans to keep the same failed course no matter what the people want. Just as importantly, an unprecedented number of retired generals -- many of whom have been on the ground in Iraq -- agree that the civilian political leadership had the wrong strategy in Iraq since the beginning. Despite overwhelming evidence that the Republican strategy in Iraq is failing, this administration and the rubber-stamp Republican Congress refuse to do anything about it. Why?

Good points. The Republicans do not care what seasoned veterans and long term, career Generals have to say. We just need to "stay the course!". What course is that anyways? Has anyone seen the course we are to stay on? Has this course even been made public? What does it look like when we reach land on this Course?
I can hazzard a guess as to why they do it, because the Democrats want to end it and come home! We can't do what the other side wants no matter how much sense it starts to make! Of course, when you say you think we should leave Iraq many call you a quiter, or say you just want to "cut and run". However, strageists are starting to say that the presence of American troops is not making a difference any longer. YOu also have to look at the leadership. So many things are deteriorating that they are relying on false information, the war in Iraq, and statistics to bolster their position. I once had a Statistics professor tell me "give me any statistic and I will make it say whatever you want it too". Scary huh? Interpretation of the numbers is so skewed by both sides it is very unfortunate. I think the war and a lot of Bush's decisions recently are a smoke screen to try to hide the bad times the Republican's are having with crime and Morals (see Foley, Ney, and DeLey). Anyways, I do not know if we need to leave but I definately think we need to reconsider our course and our purpose and adjust our strategies some. The world is not our own personal playground and the United States is starting to interfere in to many sovereign nations' business.
Then again, I am not a Republican so what do I know?????
Also note, I am not a Democrat! I think the two party system is the most flawed system in America. I personally believe the two party system is worse off than the system of Public Education in America........stick that in your apple jacks and eat 'em.. :)

Styll - Clinton sent troops to Bosnia under the FLAG of the United Nations NOT the United States.......that was a true international effort against an ACTIVE case of genocide. As for Somalia, if you look at what happened and how it turned out......the US did the right thing staying out of it.

atcuag85 - The military does as it is told to do. that is what the military is founded on and what it is supposed to do! Of course they have political leanings. Colin Powell was the top ranking General in America at one point, is he not a Republican? Interesting that you would say the Military has not political connections. On the contrary, it has MANY political connections as the Brass have to kiss butt to get what they want. In return they do as they are told to do regardless of what they truly think because that is the nature of the JOB

Bush's blinders are SOOo huge and for him to 'stay the direction' potential he has to dam out an entire lotta stuff. the guy is in all probability legally blind. He would not comprehend what the definition of a performed interest is, or a minimum of what it extremely is in Iranian. yet, he in no way have been given the thought what Iran thinks is sweet for Iran isn't what the U. S. thinks is sweet for Iran. it extremely is, in spite of each little thing, the oil, funds, democracy VS Islam, Shiites, Holy Wars.

First thing, you are getting your facts from the news. Media is made up of onesided stories.
Those retired generals, more then likely, do not have all the facts that the current administration has.

I apologize that our current administration doesn't sway with the popular polls. I guess that is why we vote people into office, so they can make the decisions for us. And if the US Army is dedicating itself until 2010, shouldn't that say something since they no links to political parties.

I read the same thing. Quite frankly, I don't believe that this war will last that long. Bush will be out of office at that time, and Americans (of all political parties) will not stand for their hard earned money to go towards this senseless war much longer, especially if this same ridiculous strategy is not working. Whomever is next for the presidency will be elected based on the fact that they will be the one to end it once and for all.

Because whatever plan may have existed before failed long ago. If Bush pulls out now he'll be a failure. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers returning to civilian life will exasperate the unemployment problem while choking the industrial military complex. Iraq predictably will collapse in on itself and hate us all the more

Yup. He means to "Stay the course" even if it takes America into a giant spiral downward. I knew when the United States decided to go ahead & invade Iraq that it had the potential to turn into another Vietnam. Where it turned out to be a long drawn out unpopular war, with a very unsatisfying outcome.

I agree that it's not good PR because it conveys the impression that we don't expect the Iraqi forces to "stand up" before 2010. I don't have any better ideas, though, since leaving tomorrow would be suicidal in the long term.

If you don't support Bush's plan to stay in Iraq until all the money and available American troops are gone, you somehow "hate" America.

Messed up,huh? Most people think so too.

Since Senator John Warner has come back from his trip there last week, Bush is now saying, "well if staying the course isn't working, then we need to come up with a new plan". Go figure !

When President George Bush says "we're going to stay the course" he mean we are going to stay in Iraq till we win, that does not mean the plans are not constantly changing.
