slavery, civil war, southern bravado, Native American relocations and government give-aways of their lands, irish immigrants arriving in NY only to live in the worst, abject poverty and to be treated worse than slaves, plains disease.

People walked a lot more than they do now....or rode horses...life was simpler, not so rush rush, and homes were a lot less comfortable since central air and heating had not yet been invented.
