i.e. if new models are not sold, nor sent to other dealerships, do they go back to the mfg (which I doubt), to auction, or what?

They are put on the auction block.

Most go to car auctions in order to recover some(if any)of the lost profits.

Those vehicle stay until they're sold. This is rare, but you'll see year old leftovers the next year sometimes. They just knock money off until they sell.

Sometimes they are wholesaled... for instance Carmax is a big wholesale buyer/dealer
