There are several factors which would help determine is a smaller diameter flue will adequately vent your wood stove. If you have a new stove, the owners manual should tell you if downsizing the flue will cause troubles and how tall the flue needs to be ( how many feet of pipe). If you have an older model stove and no owners manual, try looking for a local dealer of your particular brand of stove or a local certified chimney sweep and ask them about their experiences with your model wood burner. If you must get a building permit to install your stove, check with the local building officials to see if downsizing that is not addressed by your owners manual will pass inspection. Sometimes it isn't what works, but what the local officials can read in black and white that matters.
