My HP Laserjet 4L just died & would not be cost-effective to get fixed. Already have colored printer. Refills are pretty expensive, so I'm looking for something to print bulk black & white. Thanks!

working in tech support for a clinic i would suggest depending on how much you mean for "bulk" printing any of the following depending on your work load. the HP LJ 1160 for semi-light home use. we found they burn out in about a year from heavy use but are the cheapest to buy. there is no service that can be done either as its cheaper to buy a new one. The HP LJ 2430. we use this one for people who have been burning out their 1160/1320N. I'm not sure about maintenance to it yet as we haven't had very many of them for more than 6 months but they seem to be doing a very good job so far. and for the hard cord bulk printing go with a HP LJ 4250. they don't get any better than this thing. we watch this thing print like 3 reams of paper a day and once every 300,000 sheets it gets a maintenance kit and just keeps going.

If you just want a printer that handles black only, and Near letter quality is good enough, you might want to look into an Epson dot matrix printer. Incredily reliable, a bit noisy, but much less expensive per page. The ink is in a ribbon that fits around a print head with a number of pins that strike an image onto the paper much like a typewriter.

Epson C88 or R220 which can print directly onto discs.

Both of these can use cheap compatibles...best one I've found is G&G Brand.

Use HP 20lb paper w/Colorloc and you won't need the Durabright Inks.

I would go with dot matrix. Oki Data is a great brand, uses ribbons which are available at Office Depot, and can print forever on one ribbon. Good luck.
