It's just a small snack before the main entree is served. I think it originated from fancy dinners of old, when they would have 7 course dinners etc.
My favorite apps would have to be sambuca shrimp, calamari, or spinach&artichoke dip

Appetizers are there to keep you from starving while you're waiting for the chef to cook your main course meal.
I like Dim Sum and I don't know how to put the specific dishes in English.

Yeah, sometimes appetizers on restaurant menus are meals in themselves! We usually never order appetizers, because salads are always served ahead of the meal. They make great appetizers.

I suppose appetizers are to appease ones appetite, while waiting for the main course to arrive. My favorites are crab-meat stuffed mushrooms, crushed olive tapas, and fried onion blossoms. YUM! Just remember to save room for the main entree.

Unfortuantely these days, appetizers are enough to fill you up at most restaraunts. Chicken wings, spinich artichoke dip, potato skins are my fave.
