Anti-biotics will not help in this case. Swollen eyes are usually a result of poor diet or habitat.

Box turtles have specific requirements that many keepers are unaware of. Some common care issues include:
- Too small of a cage. An adult box turtle should be in about a 4'x4' cage
- Too cool temps. Aim for a hot spot of about 90, and about 75-80 in most of the cage. This is a common cause of colds.
- Too low of humidity (common cause of swollen eyes!) Ain for a nice, high humidity level- 75% or higher. However- enclosing the tank for higher heat and humidity leads to bad air, which leads to eye infections, respiratory illness, etc.!
- Wrong diet. in the wild, box turtles eat 75% insects, wroms, and snails. In captivity, many people offer too much vegetables (which also contributes to swollen eyes and weakness), or fatty meats. Meals should be supplemented with reptile vitamins and reptile calcium supplements.

Use a good caresheet, like those at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com and see what things you can correct as far as care and diet go. For a couple weeks, let your turtle recover with minimal stress or handling, some warm water soaks, and slightly warmer temps.

If it still is as sick in a week, then take it to a vet.

The picture is a little deceiving -- is that the tail missing, or is it a protrusion from the cloaca? If it is the tail, good first aid -- cleaning, topical antibiotics, etc will do just fine. Watch for further tissue loss of the tail -- that could me a spreading, systemic infection. If that is a prolapsed cloaca, then he should see a good exotics vet -- it may need surgery.

Please take it to a vet right away. A vet can not only sell you the antibiotic but the vet will do a much better job of properly diagnosing the problem.

A veterenarian can properly diagnose your pet and prescribe him the correct medication and doseage. Don't try to mess with this yourself. People go to school for years to learn how to keep our pets feeling their best.

Most vets have medicine for reptiles. Why don't you ask you're vet?
