What is the difference between the machine at the doctor's office and the ultrasound at the main hospital? What do they look for? I'm being sent to one for my 18 week check up.

I can't believe how many people think that Dr.s offices have better equipment. It is th other way around! Hospitals get grants and can afford higher end US machines and small dr.s offices can not.. Think about the volume of scans a hospital does per month, compared to a Dr.s office. Of course the hospital is going to have the best imaging equipment.

If your Dr. ordered one at the hospital, be glad, he/she knows they have better equipment. Like Sonia said, go and enjoy. Don't try to over analyze it.

There is no difference one may just be more high tech usually in dr office they use it for quick things like finding the heart etc. The 18week check up is a major ultrasound (totally normal thing to have done it does not mean something is wrong with the baby) where they look at the length of the baby how the organs are forming, estimate how far a long you are and if you want to know and baby is cooperative the sex. For this ultrasound you are sent to a place that specializes very specifically in the ultrasound.

There isn't a difference in the machines, but some insurance won't pay for Dr office ultrasounds, but will pay for hospital or vice versa. They will look at your placenta, umbilical cord, baby's heart, kidneys, stomach, brain, sex organs, bones, spine etc. They can tell at 18 weeks how the baby is progressing so far. They will measure the head and body to determine weather your due date remains the same as projected too. Good Luck.

It depends. Some hospitals do not have the same budget that a for profit doctors office/clinic/conglomerate has, therefore the machine in the hospital may be older and do not possess the speed, computer enhanced features, and clarity of details that the newer ones possess.
The procedure should be the same. The radiologist can interpret both without problems.
Go wherever it suits you.

the difference between my doctors office machine and the hospitals is that the one at the hospital is the newest up to date machine so it can measure the baby's brain, limbs, and spine for correct develpment. it can tell if something serious is wrong with the baby or if there is enough water in your sack and that your uteris is formed properly. it also determines the sex and how big your baby may be at birth. it should be a fun experience for you so lay back and enjoy.

Ultrasounds determine sex of baby. It also checks to make sure the baby is growing normally and all of it organs are functioning and developing right.

apparently they saw something that looked abnormal at the doctors' office, unless their machine is malfuntioning. so don't be worried just go for your appointment. everything will be alright.
