Next year my oldest will be off to college. Then it will be me and my youngest who will be in 8th grade. Once she graduates from high school in 2012, I will be all alone in a very small town (5600 people). I have a decent job. But will struggle a little without child support. And I don't have family here. My family lives out West. So I have thought about moving out there next year or after my youngest is out of high school (I will be 43 then). I am scared of the challenge. But it is comforting knowing that I will have family near that can help if necessary. But then again, living in a small town does seem better because I already have a job and the cost of living is less.

I was a single mom too. I always worked, but the child support came in handy. When my son was in junior high I talked to a counselor at a local college and got some assistance so that I could go back to school two nights a week and on Saturday so that I could eventually get a better job or a promotion. It was hard working all day, raising my son and going to school too - but I did it. By the time he graduated high school and left home for college himself, I was in a great new position at work and was totally financially independent. So see if you can take some classes to get a better position where you are or a whole new job. That way no matter if you decide to stay where you are, or move - you will be fiscally stable and not dependent on anyone else to help you "if necessary". It's a little scary but if I can do it anyone can and it it does wonders for your self esteem too. You'll love this new phase of your life. Good luck to you!

Depends solely where your moving back to of course as CA can be expensive and also if yoour contact with your children remains good-I would be jonesing for mine. Look on yahoo jobs and get an idea or what and where- also talk with your family in CA. I'm 46 and I know I could do it,but I don't know your work experience etc......GOOD LUCK!
