As long as they have permission from the Personal Representative (executor) and no beneficiaries object. My wife, her brother and I lived in their late father's house while his estate was in probate.

Yes if they have a legal right to live there. And it can be up to the exectitor of the will.

in a large esate the wife may still be living in the house,
or children already living in the house may still live there.

The estate may rent it out in some cases.

With permission of the court of course
