I have my dr. appt. today. I am 4 months along. Will they be able to tell me if it's a boy or a girl? I also have another ultrasound in 2 weeks. I was told I was going to an ultrasound specialist at 18 weeks pregnant because those machines are much better and can really take a good look at the baby. The one at the normal doctor's office is quite small and not very clear. Has anyone gotten an ultrasound with the "BIG Machine" as they call it?

They can tell at 16 weeks but most dr's wont look until 20 because most peoples insurance only allows one scan during pregnancy and 20 weeks is usually when its done to check for defects and other possible problems

yes they should be able to tell by now unless the baby is positioned so that they can't tell. i was exactly 4 months when they determined the sex of my baby. no i never had an ultrasound done on the "big machine". that's pretty neat though that they are letting you do that because i just had that first one at 4 months done on the original ultrasound machines and then i just had another one done at about 32 weeks on the same machine and it totally sucked the second time but it had alot to do with the lady that did my ultrasound because she was very rude and went really fast. it made me and my family soooo mad. so just feel lucky that you get to have a really good one done and at only 18 weeks.

I'm pretty sure they can tell at 16 weeks - I know they can tell at 18 weeks cause thats when I found out during one of my pregnancies. I think the big machine is just the one in the radioligy dept the one in the office is probably usually smaller becuz they're just checking really quick things like head position for a 9 month pregnant woman (they did that for me) or how many babies are there on a barley pregnant woman. Well Good Luck!

I was told at 18 weeks that I was having a boy, we had to go to a special clinic and use the "big machine" as well. Man were we surprised when the doctor said "It's a GIRL!" Our Braxton turned into a Mikayla in an instant :)

Usually most doctors wait until between 20 to 24 weeks to determine gender as most baby's are more developed then. Good luck to you!

Good news, they will be able to tell you boy or girl at 18 weeks! They can tell earlier, but I'm not sure exactly when. They usually wait til 18 weeks for your first ultrasound because they also look at the heart, placenta, umbilical cord, kidneys, stomach etc. They should ask you if you want to know the sex before they get to it. They will also give you a couple of pictures to keep usually. Good luck!

Sometimes you can see clearly anywhere between 16-20 weeks... depends on baby's position and experience of technician.

Then there are people like, whose baby is being stubborn at 37 weeks and three ultrasounds later, not letting us see (hands in the way, won't move behind)

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I think they can tell as early as 17 weeks-----but doctors schedule almost at 5 months so they will tell....I had my appointment at 19 weeks and they were able to tell --- it was a boy!
