This may sound nuts, but some of my most prized gifts in the first weeks after my son was born were: disposable diapers! It's really a pain when you run out and they're not cheap! Winter clothing is also a must, given your due date and boys' clothes are much more difficult to find secondhand (keep this in mind as he gets older!). A bassinet is good for the couple months, a crib that converts to a toddler bed.
Soft toys, esp. ones w/silky coverings are great for babies. My son used to hold onto his windbreaker and fall asleep, due to it's satin-like feel!
Try to steer your family and friends toward useful items rather than showy, special occasion ones that you'll rarely use. Anyway, those are more fun for YOU to pick out!
Stock up on pacifiers, teething rings and rattles or other toys your son will enjoy holding, and throwing away for you to retrieve (a normal behavior, btw). These things have a way of getting lost!
A spare stroller or carriage (the kind that convert into baby seats inside) (esp. for winter) and car seat are good ideas, since you never know when or where you might need them.
MUSIC! Most babies love soothing music, like classical, so ask for a tape or CD player, that your son can use as he grows, too.
There are so many things...my kid is 16 now, so we're thinking about stuff like guitars and amps....wish we had a registry!
Best of luck!

Things you will need in the future and may not need right away...
1) Baby gates
2) Booster Seat (for the table once they outgrow their high chair)
3) Potty
4) DIAPERS AND WIPES (you will need alot of these... diapers i've found the most common size that your son will be in for a while is size 3)
5) Sing along CD's... your child can grow up with these from birth to toddler years and then some!
6) Step stool
7) Toybox
8) Crib sheets (if you use a toddler bed after the crib, these sheets will work as it uses the same mattress)
9) Night Light
10) Diaper Creams (all different kinds... Triple Paste, Balmex, Desitin, A&D Cream and Ointment...etc)
I do not recomend getting a baby wipe warmer. I have talked to many other parents about this and it just is a waste of money.
Best of luck to you and your family. Congrats on the little boy!

They give you lists when you go to Toys R Us and Target of what items are usually on registries, but you don't need everything that is on there. Here are a few things you will absolutly need: Diaper gene and inserts, bed sheets, towels, washrags, emergency kits of baby meds, bath wash, Dr. Smith's diaper rash cream(its the best), diapers, wipes, blankets(get the flannel ones, they work best to swaddle) onsies and sleepers with feet, socks, bottles and bottle warmer, bottle cleaning tools, pacifiers(all different shapes cause you never know which your baby will like best), carseat and stroller, bath tub, crib if you don't already have one, canging table pad and covers(get 2 or 3 cause you will have accidents on the changing pad). That's all I can think of that you will need immediately, but look through their list to see some fun things that other people can buy you too. Registering is so much fun, so is getting the stuff you need!

Remember the little stuff! Nail clippers, the booger sucker thing, diaper rash cream, baby soap, and wash clothes. I forgot the little stuff and it was hard to get my hubby to buy the right things! Also, crib seats, bassinet sheets and mattress covers! Hmm, otherwise crib, blankets, car seat stroller, some clothes (but don't go nuts with blue....the ultrasound could be wrong lol my friend bought all pink and was really suprised to see a boy come out!) Bottles, pacifiers, bottle brush and don't get the warmer, the hospital recommends not warming bottles anymore because it settles easier on the stomach! Oh and register for different diapers and wipes so you can try some out before you decide on a brand for you.

You know that is the most fun about it so I know you are ready. Have you planned your baby shower? Make sure you have your baby registry set before you send out invitations. Make it about a month before your shower. Your shower would probably be a good idea in Nov. You know for a list of things that you need there are web sites for instance Babys-R-Us has a list of items you of course wont need everything web sites and magazines tell you but you will know what to get.

I had a baby registry and it is a good thing to have, but it takes away all of the surprise element, you know? You can never have too many diapers, wipes, socks, bottles, etc... But don't forget about yourself. Add an inexpensive electric massager to the list to help yourself relax after all of those nights up with your new baby! Also, things like Dreft (Clothes Detergent for Babies) and infant medicine (gas drops,etc..) is nice to have on hand.

Bottle warmer - regardless of whether you are breastfeeding or formula feeding, you will need one.
Monitors, Hooded bath towel sets, curved changing table pad with covers, battery-powered mobile so you don't have to crank one up everything it winds down.
Car seats and strollers are big-ticket items and sometimes good to get on your list if your co-workers want to get in together for a gift. A big swing is definitely a great help.
Also, an activity mat with things hanging from bars was the best toy I got for my daughter. My son now uses it and I loaned it out to a friend of mine in between my two. They are about $60, but well worth it.
Best of luck.

I agree with the person who said to get things in a variety of price ranges. First of all find out if you're getting any hand-me-downs from friends or family, ie a crib or carseat or stroller and other expensive things. Then just go to the store and have fun! If you go to a place like babies r us they will probably have someone there to help you.

You need all the basics:
Changing table
Crib
Diaper Genie
Baby clothes, dressy ones and play ones
You need TONS of baby button up basic sleepers (outfits)
Baby shoes
Toys
Baby sheets, blankets
Stuffed animals
You also need to start baby proofing the house before the baby is born. Do it while you can still move around easy.

Diaper pail (I didn't see the need when I went through it, but believe me, a life saver), breast feeding support pillow. Goes behind your back and has arms. You can use it later in life for reading in bed! Bottle sterilizer (very nice to have) and finally a new breast pump (because the are very expensive... and you may not need it)
