Anytime the weather is clear you will be able to snorkel. The windward spots are always rough so it doesn't matter what time. The same goes for the calmer beaches, they pretty much always calm.

Being a Maui Boy I do not go until after lunch. If you are not used to the water is can be chilly. Say 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM would be my favorite hours. The air and water are warm. The most important thing is that you have great natural light. There are plenty of fish right off the beach to swim with. I also vote for Kihei as I always recommend it for snorkeling. The reason is if you walk far to the right you will eventually come to some rocks. If you walk out from there you will find a light current that school of fish swim into. You can swim along with them or cling to the rocks and let them swim around you. This is an amazing experience that reminds you how smart you were at age 5. Any beach on that side of the island is good though but you might discover your own speical location. You can pick up a map of good dive spots from any dive shop. You don't have to drive all over the island though. As far as being a tourist goes you are always welcome on Maui. The very spirit of the island people are welcoming by nature and we all care that you have the experience of a lifetime. Most of us realize that our economy is supported by visitors and we like the roads, schools, and parks, that visitors pay for for when they come to Maui. The Hawaiian islands do not belong only to the people who reside on the island, beaches, hills, and mountains. Hawaii is a gift to the entire world and the residents are her caretakers. My family has lived on Maui for 4 generations and we welcome you in the Aloha spirit. Come.have fun, see wonders that exist no other place on Earth, with no natural predators on the island. Maui is truly the island a discovery and dreams.

If I sound like a commerical it is natural. I have spent the majority of my lifetime devoted to the preservation of one the great wonders of the world. I love the Hawaiian islands and the people who reside there and those who come to visit.

once you're adventerous, attempt Honokeana Bay fill up the Napili ingredient and Napili Surf sea coast motels (west Maui). it must be confusing to get to while you're actually not staying in between the motels around the bay, and entering into the water is confusing besides (you're able to desire to climb down some painful rocks). however the snorkeling is phenomenal; final time i become there, there have been approximately 6 sea turtles interior the bay, which you will get quite on the brink of. once you're there in wintry climate, whilst the waves are at their height, it must be a sprint murky and you will tend to be pulled out to the sea. nevertheless, super snorkeling. the only luau i've got been to is Drums of the Pacific on the Hyatt Regency. besides the reality that i've got not got yet another to evaluate it to, the food and entertainment have been the two astonishing.

At sunup is usually clear, but my favorite time is noon. With the sun directly overhead you have the most light. Most of the bays you will go snorkeling in are very smooth. I like Kihei for snorkeling. There are never any waves unless there is a storm.

If you go out on a boat you will need to be there by 8 Am, though last time we went there was one boat going out at 9. The boats can take to places where you can get closer to the whales, or rather, ahem, let the whales get closer to you as it is against the law to approach them. We saw a mother and her calf once come very close to us. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life.

Have fun!

I'm going to Maui in a few weeks and was told early mornings you'll find more clear water, but it is much colder.
