well, first of all I think that Lord of the Rings is about a million times better than the Inheritance Cycle. however, that doesn't mean that Eragon isn't well-written or isn't good. if you want my honest opinion, LotR has a lot more depth than the Cycle. there is so much development in it, from languages, to locations and their customs, to characters, etc. you get a very thorough history of everything and everyone, and there are a lot of complex things about it that really draw you into the story. it's probably the most well-written book you'll ever read, so I would suggest reading it first. (I will warn you that although it starts a little slow, you will realize that the parts that seem to lag will only help you understand everything later on. Tolkien likes to explain things.) I still think you should read the Eragon books after that, though. I believe Paolini is extremely talented, especially since he wrote the first book when he was in high school. I do not think there is anything wrong with the style of writing he uses, and there's a lot of diversity within the characters. I do find a lot of similarities between LotR and Paolini's books, but I think it's natural for you to be influenced by the books you read/movies you watch. you're going to get a lot of purists complaining about how it's a rip-off, but honestly, the concept and purpose of the book is entirely different and it's a very good read. (the second and fourth books are the best, in my opinion.) Paolini is a lovely guy, I've written him letters before asking for advice on my own books and asking about how he got started, etc. and he's responded to every one. he's a very good writer! so, I suggest you start with LotR. you certainly won't be disappointed! not to mention the other two films are epically extraordinary - you'll want to see those too. ;) then you can venture onto Paolini's books. read them with an open mind, I promise you will enjoy those too. they are not difficult at all to get into. one thing: don't watch the movie adaption of Eragon. it's terrible and nothing like the book except that there's a dragon in it. :P @Sophia: actually, Paolini was 19 when his first book was PUBLISHED.

If you like classics and are trying to decide between Eragon and Lord of the Rings...well, the latter easily wins. Like Remy said, Paolini wrote the first two books of the Inheritance cycle when he was sixteen or so, and it definetely shows. I'm not a big fan of fantasy, in all fairness, but I really did not enjoy the first two books. In fact (and this is most unlike me) I didn't even bother to buy the rest of the series. I thought they were so boring. I mean, a lot of the first book was just the main character wandering around. Paolini has the series completed now and he is only nineteen. I would definetely not recommend this series. Tolkien's books can be a bit complicated and hard to read (The Hobbit took me three or four attempts before I had a good idea of what exactly was going on everywhere), but altogether they are definetely better written than Paolini's. Maybe you could read both series and decide what you think? Whatever you decide to read, hope you enjoy it! ~Soph
